In the House Today
Welcome I’m hanging out with: P.K. Morris
As you know we all write because it’s a passion, today we’ll learn a little about my guest and fellow Rebel Ink Press author.
What’s your favorite thing about being a writer/author?
I think my favorite thing about being a writer is being able to create different worlds with just my words, that I get to use my imagination on a daily basis. It’s like being paid to be a kid! But I also really like that by being a published author, I’m living my dream.
Why do you write?
I write because it’s fulfilling to me. It’s a distraction from a bad day, it’s cathartic and it’s just plain ol’ fun! It’s a way to clear my mind of all the wild ideas my imagination comes up with.
Do you read the same genre that you write?
I like to read just about anything and that includes Romance and Romantic erotica.
Favorite authors or books or movies.
Right now I’m really into Suzanne Collins’ books, The Hunger Games trilogy. I love The Twilight Saga books and the movies aren’t as good, but still enjoyable. Some of my favorite movies are “Grease,” “Annie,” and “Hocus Pocus.” Have to watch it every Halloween!
When did you first make the decision to become a writer?
When I was six or seven I wrote my first “book.” Ever since then I’ve loved to write. I don’t think it was so much a decision as it was just something I was really good at and growing up I’d always heard that the career you want to go into would be something that you love to do and are good at.
What’s your favorite past time?
Other than writing? I love music! Listening to it, seeing it live, singing karaoke with friends. I also love to knit and read and just hang out.
What’s the inspiration behind your current release?
I was given the prompt of a first Valentine’s Day after a divorce. That prompt sparked an idea and so I ran with it.
What have you learned so far and what do you hope to learn?
I’ve learned that promotion is hard and I hope to learn that it gets easier! Haha.
Favorite vacation destination?
Favorite vacation destination?
Oooh. Tough one. I really like going to Maine. My grandmother lives on an island and that’s a pretty awesome place to go.
What are your works in progress if any?
I’ve got a few dancing around on my laptop, but one is a sci-fi / fantasy / romance one where there’s another race of people from another planet that have come to live on Earth and the main character doesn’t know he is one until something very strange happens to him.
Do you have a day Job?
My day job is a stay-at-home mom to my rescue animals. In other words, no. But I do enjoy having all the time in the world to write and take my dog for walks.
Any of your stories or character autobiographical?
None of my published or to-be-published works / characters are autobiographical as of yet, but I’m sure at some point a piece of me will work its way in.
Share one dream with us if you can.
My biggest dream for so long was to be a published writer that at this point I’m not sure what other dreams I have. Except to get published more and get better at my craft. Those are definitely some dreams I know I can accomplish so that’s what I’m striving for.
A Single Man’s Valentine Blurb:
Kris Goodwin wants to spend his first Valentine's Day since his divorce alone in his apartment with a case of beer. But his best friend Jake has other ideas and shows up unannounced. Jake has brought supplies for what he calls the perfect single man's Valentine's Day; take-out, flowers, romantic comedies and a box of chocolates.
As the evening progresses, Jake admits the harmless crush he's had on Kris isn't quite as harmless as he's made it out to be. He's actually in love with Kris. Then Kris tells Jake the real reason behind his divorce.
A Single Man’s Valentine Excerpt:
Kris brought home a case of beer from the market planning on wallowing in his misery on his first Valentine’s Day as a divorced man. He was only on his second beer when a knock on the door of his apartment interrupted his plans. He ignored it. But then it came again, a little more insistent this time. Kris planned on ignoring it again but now someone was yelling. "Kris! Open the goddamn door already!"
Of course it was Jake. He’d be the only one to bug Kris on this specific date. "Open the door or I’m gonna use my key! And remember how much you hate that? Now hurry the fuck up! My hands are full!"
Kris sighed in defeat and pushed himself up off the leather couch. Maybe having Jake here wasn’t such a bad idea. He’d probably be able to cheer Kris up and really, Kris wasn’t so sure he wanted to deal with a hangover in the morning. Before Kris could reach the door, Jake shouted again. "KRIS MOTHER-FUCKING GOODWIN! OPEN THE GODDAMN DOOR RIGHT FUCKING NOW!"
Kris wrenched the door open, planning on cursing out his best friend for yelling so loudly in the hallway but he was rendered speechless when he saw Jake with his arms full. A large paper bag had something delicious smelling in it in one hand and a large bouquet of flowers were in the other. "Can you help a brother out?" Jake asked with a smirk. Kris nodded, silently taking the bag of food. "I need a vase."
"I don’t think I have one," Kris said.
"Thought that might be the case. Good thing I brought a backup," Jake replied then pulled a large crystal vase from his messenger bag.
"Geez, what is that? A bottomless pit or something?" Kris asked.
"Or something," Jake said with a suggestive wink.
"You know, I was planning on getting drunk tonight," Kris told his friend.
"Too bad, not gonna happen," Jake replied in a sing-song voice. "I’ve brought all the things for a good single man’s Valentine’s Day. I’ve got the food… which I see you’ve discovered." Jake looked pointedly at Kris as he watched the younger man inhale a crab Rangoon in one bite.
Kris blushed, smiling sheepishly. He swallowed and shrugged. "Sorry. Couldn’t help myself. It just smells so good and I can’t remember if I’ve eaten anything today."
"S’okay," Jake replied, moving to the kitchen with the vase and flowers. "I ordered us enough so you’ll have plenty of leftovers." He turned on the kitchen faucet and filled up the vase. Then he cut the ends off the flowers’ stems and began arranging them in the vase while Kris got out plates for their food.
"So what else did you bring for the perfect day?" Kris asked as he spooned pork fried rice onto his plate.
"Well, I’ve got the food, flowers, movies—romantic comedies of course." Jake grinned at Kris who groaned. "And the obvious…" He dug around in his bag and pulled out a heart-shaped box. "A box of chocolates." Kris rolled his eyes and handed Jake his chopsticks, getting a fork for himself. "You do know there’s another set of chopsticks in there for you, right?"
Kris made a face. "You’ve never seen me use chopsticks, have you?" Jake shook his head. "I get more food down my shirt than down my throat."
Jake snorted. "Now that’s something I’d like to see."
"Dude, it would ruin the mood."
Jake raised an eyebrow at his friend. "The mood? And what mood would that be, Krissifer?"
Kris looked thoughtful for a moment then shook his head. "The mood is depressing so really, it wouldn’t mess with the mood," he said and led Jake back to the living room.
"Oh come on now, Kris, no depressing moods allowed," Jake replied, popping the first moving into the DVD player.
"Speak for yourself," Kris muttered as he dug into his food.
Jake made his way over to the leather sofa and sat down next to his best friend, curling his long legs under him. "Seriously, Kris, tonight’s going to be special."
"There’s nothing special about tonight," Kris replied grimly.
Jake laid his hand on Kris’ knee and gave it a squeeze. "Trust me, it’s going to be special. How could it not be? We’ve got each other."
Kris looked at Jake out of the corner of his eye. "What’s up with you? I thought you despised this holiday because you’re always single when it comes around."
Jake smiled softly. "Let’s just say I’ve had a change of heart this year."
